It seems like common sense that smiling would relieve stress. After all, we are far more likely to smile when we are having fun! However, did you know that the act of smiling in itself is a stress reliever? Our body is so used to sending the signal that “joy = a smile”, that putting on a smile even if you aren’t in the best of moods can trick your body into boosting positive neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin.

There’s a reason why the expression “a smile that lights up the room” exists. Its because, much like yawning, smiling is contagious! That’s why we say we’ve “caught” the giggles, or can’t help but smile when we see a loved one really enjoying a good joke. What’s not to love about being the guy or girl who walks into a room and lifts everyone else up?
